Since 2001, at the end of July Gállogieddi becomes a meeting place for Sámi from all over Sápmi. People gather for a weekend of celebrations, concerts, and events. This is Márkomeannu festival.
Held at on the Norwegian side of Sápmi, Márkomeannu takes place in an area commonly known as “Márku”.
This festival celebrates pan-Sámi music and art as well as local Sámi customs. This is only one of the many Sámi
gatherings held in Sápmi. Yet Márkomeannu is distinct from other cultural festivals with a Sámi
profile with regard to its history, its objectives and importance in the identity-construction and
preservation of the local Márka-Sámi culture.
Its uniqueness stems from the specific socio-cultural
context in which it first developed.

At Márkomeannu, Sámi languages are not just spoken but they are also visually presented and used.
They become part of the local “linguistic landscape” (Landry & Bourhis, 1997).
When possible, buildings, signs and objects are marked in Sámi along with the English or Norwegian translation. For instance, fountains are labelled čáhci/Vann (“water” in North Sámi and in Norwegian respectively).
